Balance Bikes!

Christmas is now only 23 sleeps away! What a great gift a first bicycle makes and what a great way to introduce your child to cycling, by getting them started on a balance bike... here are a few ideas for the littlest ones in the family:

For a great value- for- money, first bicycle, the 12inch Vitus Smoothy BalanceBike
is suitable for 2-3 year olds with an inside leg measurement of around 33-44cm and has good reviews, currently £89.99 at Wiggle

The seat has been designed with a padded scoop saddle to ensure your child is sat in the correct position and the seat post and handlebars are adjustable for as your child grows.

What I like best about the Vitus:
  • the integrated footrests for that 'game-changing moment' when your child has learnt  to balance and learns how to glide on the bike!
  • there is a very useful carry handle for us parents (when they've had enough trying for the day)
  • the bike is light at 3.2kg, making it easy for kids to handle
Although the FROG brand is more pricey, it has a very good reputation and has a higher re-sale value...

The 14 inch FROG Tadpole Plus Kids Balance Bike
is for kids around the age of 3-4 years with an average inside leg measurement of around 38cm, it weighs 4.18kg and is available for £200 at Leisure Lakes Bikes

What I like best about the Frog:
  • The handlebar has a steering lock to avoid over steering and unnecessary falls during the early days of learning to balance
  • This bike has breaks, so you spend less on replacing their sole-less shoes!
  • quick release seat bar, so no tools needed for height adjustment as they grow
And finally...
The Commencal Ramones 12 Push Bike 2021
I have to say, this little balance bike is looking good! it weights 4.5kg and is suitable for kids with an inside leg measurement of between 41-46cm, selling for £199 at Chain Reaction Cycles

What I like:
  • the foot rests are spacious for growing feet
  • this bike is disk brake ready so you can mount a rear brake once your kid has learnt to balance
  • these tyres are more suited to trails/off-road riding, which is where we like to be most!
