Babies and Bikes
At the age of 2, both our kiddies started riding! A second-hand Specialized Hotwalk balance bike got them on their way...
by the age of 3, they were both riding bicycles- without stabilisers! The peddle-bike you start them off on makes a huge difference! Most cheaper bikes for kids are scaled down versions and proportions of adults bikes, however, kids bodies develop at different stages, often they have longer legs in proportion to the rest of their normal 'adult' proportions or a bigger head, their little bulging tummies are squished full of the vital organs they are still 'growing into'. Riding a kids bike with the standard scaled-down dimensions can cause the child to be top heavy as often the seat is raised to accommodate their longer proportioned legs causing them to lean and bend over the handlebars, making their tummies uncomfortable and not to mention their little legs having to peddle furiously in the wrong position which makes this so much harder! This often leads to the child losing interest in riding very quickly, I don't blame them! Thankfully there are some great new brands out there, to name but a few of the ones we found to come out on top of most reviews were "IslaBikes", "Frog Bikes" and our favourite "Squish" bikes that are designed to the specific needs of kids who are learning to cycle, when it comes to weight and the structure and they have a good re-sale value. We chose to spend the extra money to invest in keeping the kids active and away from the screen and we've already had some amazing family outrides!
So far so good!
